High temperature heat transfer fluids

Production and process industries are facing increasing pressures to maximise productivity. This means the operating temperature of heat transfer systems is increasing and must be reached faster. To achieve this, high performance heat transfer fluids are needed, but efficiency is not the only requirement for systems operating at high temperatures.

Why use a high temperature heat transfer fluid?

All thermal oils degrade over time, but this is accelerated at high temperatures. In fact, for every 10°C increase in temperature over its recommended upper operating temperature limit, the lifespan of a heat transfer fluid decreases by half. Therefore, if you require high temperature heat transfer, you need a heat transfer fluid with excellent thermal stability.

High temperature heat transfer fluids typically have a high boiling point and low vapour pressure to avoid unwanted vaporisation. They also have a high flash point and high fire point to minimise fire risk and ensure the safety of staff working in the facility.

Why heat transfer fluids degrade

There are two ways in which heat transfer fluids can degrade.

  1. Oxidation.
    A thermal fluid oxidises when it reacts with oxygen in the air by a free radical mechanism. The rate of oxidation increases with temperature and the reaction causes carbon to form.
  2. Thermal degradation, also known as thermal cracking.
    When a thermal fluid is heated above the maximum film temperature specified by the manufacturer, it will start to degrade rapidly. This leads to vaporisation and the formation of carbon.

Vaporisation results in increased viscosity of the fluid, which means more energy is required to pump it around the system and this leads to increased costs for businesses.

The formation of carbon in thermal fluid also increases the viscosity. When its concentration reaches a certain level, it starts to deposit in a sludge on the insides of the pipework, in a process known as fouling. The sludge accumulates, particularly in low flow areas such as reservoirs and expansion tanks, and reduces the efficiency of heat exchange. This also increases costs for businesses.

Solar power generation

Solar power generation is often focussed on photovoltaics, but concentrated solar power systems are now more popular. They work by using solar light to heat a thermal oil. To minimise degradation and maximise its lifespan, the thermal oil used must have excellent thermal stability.

A suitable heat transfer fluid for solar power generation is Globaltherm ® Omnistore, a molten salt-based heat transfer media that can withstand temperatures up to 600°C, which is higher than most thermal fluids on the market today.

Food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing

Heat transfer fluids for food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing should be non-hazardous and non-toxic. In food and beverage processing, they must be NSF HT1 certified to ensure safety in case of incidental contact with food products.

On top of this, many processing reactions in these industries have high operating temperatures and extremely precise temperature control is required. Therefore, high temperature thermal fluids are needed that allow precise temperature control and are non-toxic and non-hazardous.

Plastics processing

Many operations in the plastics processing industry require high temperatures, such as the polymerisation and polycondensation of polyester, nylon processing and the production of synthetic fibres. Fortunately, there are many suitable heat transfer fluids for these applications, such as Marlotherm LH, which can operate at temperatures between -30°C and 360°.
