Why do I need to filter heat transfer oil?

All heat transfer fluids will degrade over time and if the fluid is left unattended, the by-products created during degradation can negatively impact the system. Debris can form from the internal pipes of the system, wear from pumps and fittings or from the oxidation of the fluid itself.

These solid particles can also cause fouling in the heat exchanger, which can lead to a reduction of heat transmission in heaters and machines, restrict flow and eventually wear down pumps, seals and valves.

What happens if I leave the fluid unattended?

If manufacturers do not monitor fluid and remove these particles efficiently it will impact the system and production. At the high operating temperatures required in many applications, the bonds that exist between hydrocarbon chains will start to break and form shorter (commonly referred to as ‘light ends’) and longer chained hydrocarbons (‘heavy ends’).

The accumulation of heavy ends results in the formation of sticky carbon deposits or sludge and can be monitored by analysing the carbon residue levels in a system operating with thermal fluid.
